Total tooth loss is less common now than ever, but there are instances where a dental patient can be without any of their natural teeth and looking for a way to restore function and appearance. With new options in modern dental care through the wide-spread use of implants, patients have more choices than ever before to replace one or both arches of teeth.
The choice, however, often boils down to removable dentures or fixed dentures that are attached to implants. Both offer benefits that can make them appealing options for patients with differing goals. At Arden Executive Dental, we want you to make the best choices for your health and preferences. With that in mind, compare the two most popular ways to replace full arches of natural teeth:
Removable Dentures
As the go-to option for comprehensive teeth replacement, dentures have been around for decades and can now be made in a variety of materials to mimic the appearance of real teeth. Depending on a patient’s benefits, dentures may also be covered by insurance providers, typically making them the most affordable solution. The process for getting dentures does not involve any invasive treatment either.
However, dentures must be removed nightly and applied each day, held in place with a dental adhesive. While this adhesive can be beneficial in keeping dentures in place, it is not fail-proof; denture patients often find their teeth coming loose throughout the day. Location of dentures can affect your experience, as well. Patients with an upper denture are typically satisfied with their teeth, as upper dentures remain more stable by suctioning to the roof of the mouth. Lower dentures are typically more problematic.
Permanent Dentures: Implant-Supported Teeth
With dental implants, patients enjoy a full-arch prosthesis that is far more stable. Your teeth are held in place by posts that are anchored in bone, creating a strong attachment and allowing you to eat more of your favorite foods. Implant dentures are also versatile, in that your dentures can be snapped on with fewer implants or permanently screwed in place with additional implant posts, allowing them to feel more like your own teeth.
Conversely, the addition of implants makes fixed dentures a more costly investment, and may not be covered by insurance to the extent of regular dentures. If you are not an immediate candidate for implants, pre-treatments that include surgical processes may be necessary. Patients who prefer to avoid oral surgery may not be compatible with this treatment option.
